Iraq and Afghanistan
At the end of 2011, our armed forces left Iraq and our troops are slated to leave Afghanistan in 2014. I eagerly await the day our troops can come home but it is imperative that we not leave before the job is finished. American soldiers have made significant progress in Afghanistan but it still remains a volatile area.
Like all Americans, I am extremely proud of the Navy SEALS that killed Osama bin Laden. Our country and the world owe these brave men a tremendous amount of gratitude. What the SEALS accomplished is without question an important feat for our national security.
I commend our soldiers for the sacrifices they make for our country. They have my utmost respect and admiration. We can never repay the military families who have lost loved ones but they have my eternal gratitude and my thoughts and prayers are with them.
War Powers Act
In March 2011, President Barack Obama committed the United States to military operations in Libya, without informing Congress or the American people of his intentions. According to the War Powers Act of 1973, a president can engage in certain hostilities but must notify Members of Congress who are on committees related to national security and defense, which President Obama failed to do.
On June 3, 2011, I voted for two resolutions, H. Res. 292 and H. Con. Res. 51, expressing disapproval of the Obama Administration’s actions regarding Libya. I have also cosponsored the War Powers Reform Act (H.R. 1609) which takes steps to ensure that the American people have a voice when it comes to sending troops into harm’s way.
I am a staunch supporter of Israel. Israel is one of the United States’ closest allies and I am committed to ensuring that the country remains a strong and free democracy in the Middle East. With a shared commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and individual rights, the United States and Israel share a deeply held bond that has helped to combat the threat of terrorism both countries face. It is imperative that we stand with Israel against those who wish to destroy both of our countries and undermine our freedoms.
