Congressman Ribble Releases Statement on Proposed Military Action in Syria

Sep 10, 2013 Issues: Defense, National Security

Washington, D.C. -

The following is a statement by Congressman Ribble regarding action in Syria:

Like the vast majority of my constituents, I have had concerns about the President’s proposal for military strikes against Syria since he first stated his intentions a few weeks ago.  However I felt it was important to refrain from making final conclusions until I was able to hear from Administration officials directly and receive a full briefing on the facts and proposed course of action.  That briefing with the President’s national security team occurred yesterday evening.

Having now been fully apprised of the situation and objectives, I am fully opposed to military action at this time.  I do not believe it is in America’s national security interest to take military measures against Syria even given the atrocities committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people.  Until or unless the situation changes, or America’s security interests are truly at risk, I believe we should continue to pursue alternative methods of holding the Assad regime accountable and  I would vote ‘no’ on any authorization of military force if it were presented in the House of Representatives.
